Field trips

The field trips around the harbour are being sponsored by our local Remedial Action Plan Office (RAP) and are included in the price of the conference.

  • Harbour Paddle Tour (approx 10-20 participants). A guided tour of various waterfront sites via voyageur canoe. Tandem kayaks will also be available depending on the number of participants. The tour is guided by S.A.N.D. Adventure Tours and requires basic paddling skills and sufficient endurance to paddle for a couple hours. (approximately 2 hours on the water).
  • Harbour Remedial Sites – Thunder Bay is one of 43 Areas of Concern identified on the Great Lakes, and one of 4 AOCs on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Remediation work on Thunder Bay’s waterfront has been ongoing for several decades including: Pool 6 site – home of the Transportation Museum of Thunder Bay, cruise ship docking, and future home of the Thunder Bay Art Gallery; Fisherman’s Park West – restoration site at the mouth of the Current River; and Superior Fine Papers – large complex industrial site remediation project (Approximately 2 hours + transitions between sites).
